- HIFIMAN Deva Pro Wireless: An Understated Surprisingly Exceptional All‑Rounder Review by Thomas C.
-
The Deva Pro Wireless is a meaningful step forward from the original Deva—and honestly, one of the best values under $200. HIFIMAN didn’t just refresh the design; they refined the entire experience in ways that matter day to day. I use it equally in wired and wireless modes, and that versatility has made it a staple in my listening rotation.Value Quality Price
A Standout Feature: The Removable Bluetooth Dongle
One of the biggest upgrades is the mini, removable Bluetooth dongle built around HIFIMAN’s superb Himalaya R2R DAC/amp. It’s high‑resolution capable, surprisingly powerful, and—best of all—usable with any wired headphone if you add a simple 3.5mm TRS female‑to‑female adapter. That alone makes it far more flexible than most bundled wireless solutions. In practice, it drives almost anything I throw at it. Even my notoriously inefficient HE6se reaches a respectable volume. Battery life varies by codec and volume, but with the power-hungry highest-resolution LDAC I get around 6–8 hours. Charging is slow and takes a few hours from empty, but the dongle can run while plugged into USB‑C, so I rarely feel limited.
There are a couple of quirks:
No onboard volume control.
No indicator showing which codec is active.
For single wired connection, the dongle input jack only worked with a 3.5mm TRS plug stereo input cable, not the advertised and more costly 3.5mm TRRS plug.
The dongle always selects the highest‑quality codec available, pairs quickly with a double‑press of the power button, and supports everything from SBC to LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, and AAC—great news for iPhone users.
Build, Comfort, and Design
The Deva Pro benefits from HIFIMAN’s trickle‑down tech, including their ultra‑thin diaphragm and stealth magnet design. These improvements give it better resolution and faster transients than you’d expect at this price.
Comfort is another strong point. The ear cups are “right‑sized”—not too big, not too small—and their shape reminds me of the flagship Susvara. That similarity isn’t just aesthetic; it translates into a natural, easy‑to‑wear fit that works beautifully for long sessions.
My Comfort & Sound Mods:
To fine‑tune the experience, I made a few small modifications:
-- Swapped the stock pads for hybrid PU leather/fabric + memory foam pads with a smoother fabric surface.
-- Removed the pad's grill cloth (retaining the ear cup mesh grill) for a more open, airy sound.
-- Added a Capra suspension strap to fix the stock headband discomfort.
-- Slightly reduced clamp force by gently bending the headband.
These tweaks improved comfort, bass response, and overall openness without changing the headphone’s overall character.
Daily Use: A True All‑Rounder
In everyday listening, the Deva Pro has become one of my most reliable headphones. The ear cup size hits a sweet spot:
-- HIFIMAN headphones with the larger ovoid cups can feel oversized and awkward on smaller heads.
-- Their models with the round cups are often too small for many listeners.
-- The Deva Pro sits comfortably in the middle—spacious enough for an immersive sound but compact enough to maintain a proper seal and long‑term comfort.
Whether I’m plugged into a portable device, working at my computer, or watching TV, the Deva Pro consistently delivers an enjoyable experience. And because it’s reasonably priced, I don’t worry about accidental bumps and mishaps the way I do with my higher‑end models. Those stay reserved for critical listening.
Sound Quality: Wireless That Feels Wired
LDAC performance is shockingly close to wired mode. In casual and even semi‑critical listening, I often can’t tell the difference. Wired mode still scales with higher‑end source gear, revealing more detail, but the gap isn’t dramatic unless you’re really pushing it. With mid‑fi sources—wired or wireless—the differences are subtle. That’s part of what makes the Deva Pro so easy to live with.
Value and Final Thoughts
I genuinely prefer the Deva Pro over other HIFIMAN models under $500 for daily use. It hits a rare balance of comfort, versatility, and sound quality that makes it feel far more expensive than it is. I even own two pairs—one for my office and one for the bedroom. The removable Bluetooth dongle adds a layer of flexibility that few headphones offer. I can pair it with any of my wired headphones when I want a different or higher-end sound signature without giving up wireless convenience.
Overall, the Deva Pro Wireless is an understated gem in HIFIMAN’s lineup. It’s an easy recommendation for anyone who wants a capable, enjoyable wired/wireless headphone without spending a fortune. (Posted on 1/3/26)
